Humane Skills

It’s time to focus on humane skills

Humane skills have always been in the spotlight, especially in the service sector. The two big currently unfolding global events – the COVID-19 pandemic and the looming climate change crisis are making them more important now than ever before. These events are driving changes in the way we live and work. On one hand, the pandemic has triggered a need for a more flexible way of working with most organizations opting for either a fully remote or hybrid work environment. While on the other, climate change is creating a need for a more inclusive and sustainable business model. To meet the demands of this challenging environment, organizations need a workforce with strong humane skills.

What are humane skills?

Google’s English dictionary defines ‘humane’ as:

humane

adjective / (h)yo͞oˈmān/

1.       having or showing compassion or benevolence.

Synonyms: compassionate, kind, considerate, understanding, sympathetic, good-natured, humanitarian, benevolent

2.       (of a branch of learning) intended to have a civilizing or refining effect on people.

Compassionate individuals genuinely care. They are sensitive to the other person’s situation and perspective and other living beings in general. These qualities make them effective communicators and collaborators in different situations and with different people. It also makes them responsible and emphatic leaders. These skills are especially needed in the current remote/hybrid work setting. These skills are also essential to build a conscious business that works for the benefit of both human beings and the environment. Ultimately, empathetic, compassionate, creative, and conscious individuals build harmonious, resilient, and sustainable teams, workplaces, and businesses.

How do we build humane skills?
